A 16-year-old boy went missing after being swept out to sea whilst swimming at Blythedale beach.

The Gledhow pupil was swimming at around 5 pm on Monday when he got into difficulty and was swept away from the shore. An off duty police officer noticed the swimmer in difficulty and called IPSS Medical Rescue as well as KDM Fire & Rescue. The IPSS water rescue division, together with KDM lifeguards, responded to the beach and initiated an extensive search. According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, the search was suspended with negative results due to poor light on Monday afternoon. Lifeguards had already closed the beach and the necessary warning flags were displayed. People were warned to adhere to cautionary flags and directives. The search continued on Tuesday morning with KDM lifeguards and IPSS bringing along a lifeboat, a jet ski, as well as a drone.

A thorough search from the north to the south of Blythedale was conducted however, the search had to be called off around midday due to poor weather and will resume tomorrow. No further details were made public at the time of going to press.
