THE legacy of struggle icon Nelson Mandela was commemorated extensively in KwaDukuza with 100th birthday celebrations held by various organisations and government departments as well as community members on Wednesday, July 18.

KwaDukuza residents hosted different initiatives to pay tribute to the late struggle icon taking 67 minutes to do something for their community in honour of Madiba. These activities included cleaning up, painting schools, planting trees, donating to the needy, handing over of houses and feeding the hungry.

The KwaDukuza Municipality hosted the Action Against Poverty Campaign in celebrating Mandela’s legacy together with various government departments including, social development and Sassa and the health department hosted a Sukuma Sakhe Wednesday at Ntshawini as part of taking service delivery to the people.

A marathon of activities from KDM saw mayor Ricardo Mthembu and senior municipal management visit a child headed household to donate school uniforms and inspect a newly built house by the municipality in Thembeni.

Speaking at one of the venues, Mthembu said children should be looked after as they are the future of this country and that Nelson Mandela prioritised children during his lifetime.

“I would like to thank the management and staff of KDM for their commitment on this special day where we commemorate the champion of our democracy and also their continuing drive of showcasing that KDM is working for the people,” said Mthembu.

Sukuma Sakhe Wednesday ensured that the community is made aware of how certain departments work. Residents were also assisted in getting their new social grant cards as there has been problems where beneficiaries were not getting their grants.

Other activities KDM hosted included blanket distribution, a house handover at Ward 11 and planting of fruit tress among others.
