THE Maphumulo Regional Court sentenced Syabonga ‘Nyoka Nyoka’ Mthethwa (30) to life imprisonment for murder last week.

His sentence came after the court heard how he killed Sphamandla “Mansonso” Mkhize (36) on May 31, 2015.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele, Mkhize was at Tshobo area, Maphumulo, at 6.40 am when the accused produced his firearm and fired a shot towards him.

“He sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was declared dead at the scene. The accused fled the scene after the incident. A case of murder was opened for investigation at Maphumulo SAPS,” Mbele said.

She added: “A dedicated team of detectives started their investigation and Mthethwa was traced and arrested in 2016. He made several court appearances and was remanded in custody until his sentence.” -Supplied
