DAWNHEIGHTS Cricket Club claimed a bonus-point victory after trouncing Hillary Malvern by 89 runs in a KwaZulu-Natal Challenge League (Stream Two) game played at the Malvern Park on Sunday.

The hosts won the toss and asked the visitors to make first use of the batting strip, a decision which was rued by Malvern after Dawnheights openers Sagar Arora of India and Francois Mostert put on a splendid opening stand of 64 runs before Mostert was adjudged LBW to a W. Woepenaar delivery in the 12th over.

Matthew Dean made a “quick-fire” 22 before being clean bowled by A. Bauersmith. Byron was clean bowled by A. Taylor for 4 runs.

Man-of-the-match, Arora frustrated the Hillary bowlers notching up a maiden century in the KZN Challenge League before being dismissed by Taylor. His brilliant 108 runs contribution included 18 fours.

Arun Kumar and Adesh Bageloo added 27-runs for the fifth wicket before Kumar (22) was stumped by the Hillary wicket-keeper off the bowling of Taylor. Woepenaar claimed his second victim after clean bowling Surauv Singh for 11 runs.

There was a brilliant 41-runs cameo between debutante Owen Govender and Adesh Bageloo before Govender (19) was adjudged LBW to a G. Verbiest delivery. Bageloo notched up a brilliant half-century (50) which included five boundaries.

Arhad Singh (12 not out) clobbered the last delivery of the Dawnheights innings for a huge six to give the visitors a mammoth 290/8 off their allotted 50-overs. Taylor was the pick of the Hillary bowlers claiming 3/40 from 10 overs. Woepenaar grabbed 2/59 from 10 overs.

In reply the home team posted 208 all out in the 45th over, going down by 82-runs. Abdul Liaat (57), Woepenaar (38) and J. Beyers (30) impressed with the bat for the hosts.

Suveer Maharaj (3/44 from 10 overs), Mostert (2/13 from 10 overs) and Mikhalin Naicker (2/53 from 10 overs) were the pick of the Dawnheights bowlers.

On Sunday, Dawnheights will be seeking a hat-trick of victories in the KZN Challenge League when they do battle with Umlazi at the Comtech Ground in Umlazi.
