MAN-of-the match Charl Groenewald inspired Dawnheights Cricket Club to a bonus-point victory against Silver Saints of Chatsworth in a KwaZulu-Natal Challenge League (Stream One) game played at the Country Club Ground on Sunday.

The match was reduced to 40-overs due to a wet pitch. The visitors won the toss and immediately elected to bowl first, hoping to extract something from the damp conditions. But, Dawnheights took the gamble of elevating the teenage “Singh-twins”, Saurav and Arhad to open the batting.

The Dawnheights youngsters held their own and frustrated the Saints attack after putting on a patient 40-runs partnership in the opening 10 overs. Tyran Nander made the breakthrough in the 12th over after clean bowling Saurav for 22 runs.

Two overs later Arhad (13) was caught by Kumar Gounden off the bowling of Nander. Adesh Bageloo and Matthew Dean took the tally from 54/2 to 99/3 before Dean (22) offered a simple return catch to bowler Kevin Naidoo.

Bageloo smashed 26 runs which included three boundaries before being caught in the covers by Nolan Chetty off the bowling of Naidoo. The home team lost their 5th wicket (128/5) in the 29th over after Owen Govender was dismissed by Deereshan Govender.

Suhail Singh was stumped by wicket-keeper Marshen Chetty for 2 runs before Groenewald was introduced into the fray. He got off the mark with a four and left the visitors chasing red leather all over the park with some exquisite shots which was reminiscent of his heydays.

But, with wickets tumbling around him like ten-pins, Keane Govender (1), Nikilesh Misra run out for 2 runs and Mikhalin Naicker (4), he virtually ran out of partners before the Dawnheights last batman, Salman Mohamed joined him at the crease.

Groenewald raced to 38 runs which included four 4’s and a huge six before being stumped in the first delivery of the last over.
Dawnheights posted a respectable 185/10 in their allotted 40-overs.

Naidoo (3/26 from 8 overs) and Nander (2/17 from 7 overs) were the pick of the Saints bowlers.

Chasing 186 runs for victory (at a rate of 4, 65 per over) the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals and were bundled out for 128 runs in the 35th over. G. Namsaran (30), S. Pillay (20) and N. Chetty (20) were the only batsmen to register double digits.

Dean was the pick of the Dawnheights bowlers claiming 4/29 from 8 overs. He received good support from Misra (3/9 from 6 overs) and man-of-the-match Groenewald (2/30 from 7 overs).
