iLembe applauds local Provincial Disability Games athletes

MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Bongi Sithole-Moloi has applauded the disability sector for their commitment to doing things for themselves instead of relying on government and others.

Sithole-Moloi was speaking at the conclusion of the KZN Provincial Disability Games at Stanger High School on Saturday, November 10.

The games involved players with disabilities from the province’s 11 districts who competed in different sporting codes during the day-long event.

eThekwini Metro were crowned the overall winners, followed by Amajuba. UMgungundlovu took the third spot, iLembe was fourth and fifth place went to Zululand.

Teams competed in athletics (100m, 200m, relay, and wheelchair race), wheelchair basketball, chess, football, goal ball, mlabalaba, netball and table tennis.

MEC Sithole-Moloi noted that the games were hosted during the period when South Africa commemorates National Disability Rights Awareness Month, from November 3 to December 3.

The Provincial Disability Games are part of efforts by the department to promote an active lifestyle among citizens with disabilities by encouraging them to participate in sport and recreational activities.

iLembe mayor Siduduzo Gumede applauded the work of the project by the South African government and thanked them for hosting a big project like this in iLembe.
