IN an effort to raise awareness of the rights of children, the iLembe District Municipality in partnership with sector departments and other relevant stakeholders kicked off a Child Protection Awareness campaign in Mandeni on Tuesday, May 8.

Even though the country observes Child Protection Week from May 28 to June 3, iLembe has over the years dedicated the whole month of May to mobilise all sectors of society to care for and protect children. The campaign which started at Nkwenkwezi and Mbuyiselo High Schools in Ndulinde, Mandeni will visit 28 schools in total and will end on May 31.

It will focus on drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, high rate of HIV/AIDS prevalence in young girls and human/child trafficking.

Gender subcommittee chairperson Nompumelelo Zungu said that it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that the most vulnerable in our society do not suffer abuse.

“It is in our hands to stop the cycle of neglect, abuse, violence and exploitation of children. By working together we can create safer and healthier communities so that our children can thrive,” Zungu said.

The campaign was held in Mandeni until May 10 and thereafter it moves to Maphumulo from May 15 to 18, Ndwedwe from May 22 to 25 and will be concluded in KwaDukuza from May 27 to 30.

“The Department of Education has identified schools that need the most attention in each local municipality and those are the schools that we will be visiting.

“The aim is to mobilise all sectors of society to care for and protect children because they really are the future,” said Zungu.
