ILEMBE Cricket Union snatched a thrilling 4-wickets victory against Southern Natal in a KwaZulu-Natal Challenge League game played at the Country Club Ground on Sunday.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. They were bowled out for 210 runs in the 40th over. Opener Gershon Lawrence was in prolific form with the bat notching up a brilliant century (104) which included 12 fours and 2 massive sixes. Junaid Khan (35) was the only other Southern Natal batsman to register double digits.

Sashen Sadayan (2/40 from 8 overs), Alveiro Nadasen (2/36 from 5 overs) and Iqbal Sher (2/12 from 5 overs) grabbed two wickets each.

Alveiro Nadasen and Preshen Rampersad set the platform for Ilembe’s victory after putting on a splendid 98 runs opening partnership. The visitors broke the partnership in the 14th over after Rampersad (33) was adjudged LBW to a Raja Kazi delivery.

Ismail Mahomed joined Nadasen at the crease and this pair took the tally to 110/2 before Nadasen (57) was caught at extra cover by Dirk Botes off the bowling of Gareth Bishop in the 19th over.

Bishop claimed his second wicket after Mohamed Mhlongo (4) offered a regulation catch to Sbu Ngcangalele at gully. Ismail Mahomed (15) was caught and bowled by Bishop leaving the hosts in a spot of bother at 127/4 in the 23rd over.

Yusuf Ismail and Iqbal Sher wiped away the doubts of a home loss with a splendid 35-runs partnership for the fifth wicket before Ismail (12) was trapped LBW to a Bishop delivery. Sher steered Ilembe closer to the finish line (178/6) with a “quickfire” 32 runs which included four 4’s and a massive 6 before being caught by wicket-keeper Tye Thompson off the bowling of Lawrence.

Bilal Ismail (14 not out) and Comfort Shange (18 not out) guided Ilembe to an emphatic 4-wickets victory with more than 12 overs to spare. Bishop was the pick of the Southern Natal bowlers claiming 4/35 from 10 overs on a trot.

On Sunday Ilembe entertain DHS Rhythm at the Country Club Ground.
