DAWNHEIGHTS took on Morningside in Umhlali for a local Ilembe T20 match on Saturday.Morningside were inserted to bat and made a cautious but steady start. The loss of their opener saw Preshen Rampersad stride to the crease and immediately stamp his authority on the game, putting the Dawnheights bowlers to the sword. Big hitting coupled with the small boundary resulted in the scoreboard rattling along at a healthy rate and Preshen fell to the veteran Nikilesh Misra. Thereafter wickets fell at a regular rate. Morningside closed their allotted 20 overs on a respectable 172. Dawnheights got off to a disastrous start with a wicket off the first ball. Thereafter wickets continued to fall. Captain Comfort Shange brought some much required stability to the innings with Ishan Kalia. The departure of Shange (51) saw Misra join Ishan Kalia, who continued attacking the bowlers. Kalia ended on 72 not out. Misra fell two runs short of the total and Dawnheights won the match with three overs to spare.Meanwhile, in the Challenge League, Dawnheights took on Phoenix on Sunday at the Gledhow pitch. Phoenix won the toss and elected to bat. Tight Dawnheights bowling saw Phoenix lose batsmen in each of their first two overs. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals which saw the run rate being kept lower than Phoenix would have liked. At 34/7, Phoenix were reeling with Keane Govender taking four and Ishan Kalia the other three. Raj Verma then struck in his first over with two scalps. Their innings closed on 73 with the last wicket falling to Verma, who ended with three wickets. Dawnheights lost their opener in the third over and was joined by Avishkar Ramduth who, together with opener Dlamini, set about the chase. Ramduth was out on eight and that brought Verma to the crease. Verma and Dlamini (43 not out) secured the victory just before lunch was called, thereby completing a great double for Dawnheights.
