KWADUKUZA Municipality Mayor Ricardo Mthembu presided over the sod turning of two regional development projects, on Thursday, July 26.

The projects, collectively worth R1.7million, target sport and tourism in the region with the beneficiaries of these projects being the communities located in Blythedale, Ward 11, and Shakas Head, Ward 4.

Phase one of the project includes the upgrade of the Blythedale Caravan Park and the construction of a multipurpose swimming pool in Ward four.

The Blythedale Caravan Park upgrade will include the management of the storm water drains, upgrade of the two female and male ablution blocks, upgrade of event venues, and upgrades of the holiday cottages and driveways. The project is expected to be completed in three months.

The construction of the Ward four swimming pool will include the management of the storm water drainage system and other facilities which include male and female toilets. The project is expected to be completed in five months.

Speaking at the occasion, Mthembu made note of the role communities have to play in safeguarding the infrastructure provided to them by the municipality. He stated that vandalism and demolition caused to infrastructure, for whatever reason, is one of the main factors in making it seem as if government is not doing anything.

“The children of Shakas Head now have an opportunity to become the Chad le Clos’ of tomorrow; the pool we are building here meets most standards required by professional swimming bodies. I therefore encourage you, the parents, to allow your children the space to train and become the best at this sport, inevitably allowing them to assist us in our drive to use sports as a vehicle to fight crime,” said Mthembu

The aforementioned development will be the first of its kind in the KwaDukuza Municipality while the Blythedale development will boost tourism in KwaDukuza.

“Tourism is an apex priority for this region — it remains one area where we are clear that jobs will be created. Upgrading the Blythedale Caravan Park is a catalyst to creating jobs and also raising revenue for our institution, revenue that can be reinvested to further develop our communities.

“I assure the community of Blythedale that strict measures will be put in place to ensure that this development, and its spin off benefits, is not a nightmare to you and your businesses,” added Mthembu.

The two councillors appreciated the developments and highlighted that it is a relief to be able to deliver community needs whilst discussions about them are still fresh.

The developments will also produce job opportunities, thereby enabling some families to earn an income.
