ASERIAL rapist who preyed on women in KwaDukuza was sentenced to life plus 95 years imprisonment in the Durban High Court last week.

The 32-year-old man pleaded guilty to nine counts of rape and seven counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances. According to a local SAPS officer, the accused committed the crimes in the Groutville, Thembeni, Charlottedale and Chibini areas from 2011 to 2016, where he would attack the victims while on their way to work, church or school.

“The accused would rape the victims and then make off with their money and cellphones. On one occasion, the accused acted with two companions.”

The accused armed himself with a knife, and in some instances a gun was used.

There were nine women in total, ranging from 16 to 55 years old. According to DPP KZN regional spokesperson Natasha Kara, in aggravation of sentence, senior state advocate Noxolo Dube handed in victim impact statements compiled by the complainants and facilitated by court preparation officer Prudence Geraud. “In her statement, one complainant said that the incident had caused her to perform poorly at school, while another told of the embarrassment she felt having to report the rape to her son.

“The accused was linked via DNA to eight of the complainants and while DNA evidence from the ninth complainant was inconclusive, she recognised the accused and was able to identify him.”

The accused was sentenced to life and 80 years imprisonment for the rapes and 15 years imprisonment for the robberies, which were taken as one for the purpose of sentencing.

Director of Public Prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal, advocate Moipone Noko, views this sentence as appropriate given the crimes committed.

She said: “This sentence should go a long way in addressing the scourge of sexual violence.”
