A LARGE scale Mandela Week programme was launched by KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Ricardo Mthembu together with members of his executive council at the KwaDukuza Town Hall on Thursday, July 12.

The launch commenced with the mayor addressing staff on the importance of Mandela Day and how they can all play a part in honouring the struggle icon.

The municipality then embarked on a Khuculula (clean up) campaign in the CBD led by various departments and is scheduled to run until July 20 across different wards in KwaDukuza.

Speaking at the launch Mthembu said that every employee should strive to uphold and demonstrate the values Nelson Mandela stood for.

“As we launch this programme we are encouraging participation from employees in taking part in honouring the late struggle icon, so let’s work for the betterment of our future and that of the coming generation as Mandela left a lasting legacy so it’s up to us to continue that legacy,” said Mthembu.

Mandela day commemorations are expected to last the entire month of July as the late icon would have turned 100 today, July 18.

There are different activities by different organisations including KwaDukuza Municipality being undertaken to commemorate the day.

The launch coincided with the municipality’s Operation Khuculula and Impromptu Electricity Meter Auditing. These two sub-programmes are aimed at targeting illegal vendors, cleaning of the town’s streets and drains and patching of potholes as well as auditing of electricity meters, all of these will take place in the KwaDukuza CBD.
