A SCENE of billowing smoke and uncontrollable flames over 30 metres high could be seen as two fuel tankers and several gas tanks exploded at the Umvoti northbound Shell Ultra City on Sunday morning.

The blaze, which threatened to engulf the Ultra City building, caught three trucks and two homes behind the Ultra City.

It is believed that fuel theft has been provisionally identified as the cause of the fire, however, investigations by the local SAPS and fire department are underway.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Samantha Meyrick, who first on the scene, several explosions were heard from behind the building and a massive fire resulted from the burning fuel.

“Two houses behind the garage have sustained substantial damage, with one being razed to the ground. Fortunately the Shell manager and employees are well trained and the building was quickly evacuated and there were no reported injuries.”
