Mayor sets date on Etete housing project

2016-04-27 06:00

KWADUKUZA Mayor Ricardo Mthembu last Wednesday promised Etete community members that work on the housing project, which was the cause of a three-day long protest, would commence on 23 May 2016.

Mthembu was speaking to residents on Wednesday in Etete following unrest in the area which resulted in the R102 being blockaded.

He said the ward committee and relevant stakeholders should actively take part in ensuring the process and eventual establishment of the site comes to fruition.

Mthembu told residents that the contractor would employ Etete locals to work on the housing project.

However, the employment process would be the prerogative of the community, he said.

He explained that sanitation was the reason the project had been delayed since 2013, which is a matter handled by the district municipality, and the local municipality had met with iLembe District and requested to continue with the housing project.

Residents had also demanded that speed humps be constructed in the area.

Mthembu said KwaDukuza Municipality cannot assist with this request because the R102 is a provincial road, but, he said, a letter had been written to the Department of Transport regarding this matter.

Ward 7 councillor Gideon Mthembu said the houses to be constructed once the project commences in May would have Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) toilets.

The mayor urged residents to be calm, restrained and tolerant as a date has been set as to when the project would begin.

“We hope that the community would observe restraint until the contractor comes on site on 23 May 2016 and the first brick is laid as a reaffirmation of our promise. During this period, we will be finalising all the necessary processes in preparation for the commencement of the project,” said Mthembu.
