A DARNALL mother was attacked with a cane knife while shielding her child during a home invasion on Monday.

The mother and daughter walked in on a suspect armed with a cane knife in their home on Hummeloo Farm, Darnall, in the early hours of Monday morning.

It is believed that the suspect was an employee of the farm who entered the home with the intention of robbing the family after the woman’s husband had left the residence. However, the identity of the suspect and his exact motive has not been confirmed. According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, they received multiple calls for assistance for a family that was attacked. “It is believed that the single assailant, armed with a cane knife, entered through the kitchen, where the attack took place. The mother flung herself in front of the attacker so as to protect her child. The mother sustained serious injuries while her daughter was able to hide in the house and was not physically harmed. The assailant left the home after the mom and her daughter alerted neighbours by screaming.”

The mother was stabilised by paramedics before being taken to hospital for treatment.

“A case of attempted murder was registered at the KwaDukuza Police Station. Police are still searching for the suspect who fled after the incident. The motive is unknown at this stage,” said SAPS spokesperson Nqobile Gwala. Anyone with information is urged to contact the SAPS at 032 551 8206.
