KWADUKUZA municipal officials conducted spot checks for tampered electricity meters in the CBD last week and those found in the wrong were handed spot fines.

This comes after a successful launch of the Masakhane Campaign with various stakeholders on May 11, in an effort to fast track payment for municipal services under the theme “Pay Your Levies - Nothing for Mahala”.

KwaDukuza Municipality’s commitment for this initiative is proving to be steadfast, as the electrical department, lead by the executive director Sibusiso Jali despatched teams on the ground within the KwaDukuza CBD to visit local businesses to check for meters which had been tampered with.

According to Jali, part of conducting this exercise is to uphold their commitment as KwaDukuza Municipality under the pledge that was signed along with community members, the ratepayers associations, iLembe Chamber of Commerce, youth forums and the business fraternity to ensure the enhancement of revenue collection for the municipality.

It was highly stressed during the community engagement that was held at Darnall that failure to pay ones levies is effectively not only crippling the municipality but will hamper the ability of the municipality to deliver services to communities.

The spot checks that are being carried out are also to show the seriousness of the municipality that free rides and illegal practices will no longer be tolerated and that everybody has to pay for services rendered.
