Newark becoming a popular escape route for hijackers

2015-12-09 06:00

NEWARK SAPS spokesperson Malusi Ngubane said that the route running through the Newark area to Maphumulo has become a popular escape route for car thieves who hijack vehicles from places such as Durban, Empangeni as well as Richards Bay.

“About four stolen vehicles were found in the Newark area recently.
“This is the festive season, the community needs to be more vigilant and they must report any vehicles which are not familiar in the Newark area or look suspicious,” said Ngubane.

He said a Golf 5 was hijacked near Nseleni and the criminals drove from the hijack spot to Maphumulo through Newark.

“The suspects had shot the victim in the leg and wounded his head.
“When they reached Newark they tied the victim, a 32-year-old male, to a tree near a sugar cane plantation.
“He was found by sugar cane cutters last Tuesday,” said Ngubane.

He said the festive season also sees a spike in the number of crimes such as robberies and urged residents to be more aware and report any criminal activity.
