People enjoy being oppressed by their own government

THERE is no such thing as a “democratic African state”. I say this because we inherited democracy, in the form of its written laws, but devoid of practicality.

Democracy was also gifted to us top-down. It is unlike this in countries like France and England where the ordinary people fought tooth and nail for democracy, dignity and liberty.

Basically, they own their democracy, it is theirs. In Africa, people fought for freedom - freedom from the white man, freedom to do as they please, as is evident in the behaviours of many of our governments from Cape to Cairo.

In closing, this kind of behaviour should not come as a surprise since this democracy is not ours. It is common human nature for people to treat with disregard that which they did not create. As things stand, I do not see things changing for the better anytime soon because people on this continent seem to enjoy being oppressed by their own governments.
