ATHLETES and novices participating in the Open Door Assembly crèche fund-raising 5km fun run at the Manor Primary School Ground on Saturday morning were greeted with perfect weather conditions.

After the steady, much-needed rainfall throughout Friday night organisers were putting their heads together, planning a date for the postponement of the inaugural fun run. But, the rain was indeed a blessing (settling the dust) and the gentle easterly breeze on Saturday morning made conditions for the runners and walkers perfect.

Neil Rawlins stole a march on his rivals, leading the race from gun to tape to win the 5km race in a splendid time of 11 minutes. Gabriel Strassburg and Themba Hlongwa dead-heated for 2nd spot with well known KwaDukuza Athletic Club comrades marathon runners, Nishen Chetty and Dippy Moodley finishing joint third.

The Hlongwa siblings, Nonkululeko and Andiswa (following in the footsteps of their father, who finished second) grabbed the winners and runners-up spot respectively in the junior category with Kendra Moonsamy securing a podium finish.

Immediately after the fun run, participants and well wishers were treated to a feast of fun entertainment.

Principal of the Open Door Assembly crèche in Rock Park said: “We want to express our sincere gratitude to all local schools, especially Manor Primary (who have sold more than 500 tickets) and the community of KwaDukuza for supporting our fun run.

“Our crèche is a non-governmental organisation and any help from the business-houses or individuals is most welcome.

“With Christmas barely 23 days away its an ideal opportunity to bring some cheer or a smile upon the faces of our children through your kind donation”.
