TRANSNET Freight Rail, in partnership with various government departments and the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM), launched the state of readiness programme for the arrival of the Phelophepha Healthcare Train at the KDM council chambers on Friday, January 12.
The mobile clinic is part of Transnet’s social responsibility initiative that began in 1994 with three coaches which has since been extended to 16.
The train will be categorised into four clinics, which will include an eye clinic, general health care for the public, dental clinic and psychology clinic and also offered on board will be cancer screenings.

According to Transnet Freight Rail’s Avasha Gopaulsingh the service on the train is free and will cater for 10 000 to 15 000 people a week.

“The service will be on a first come first serve basis and free on all of the four clinics which we will be rendering to the people of KwaDukuza.
“Only when patients want prescribed medicine and in optometry clinic­ will they be required to pay R30 for a pair of reading glasses as we will be also be doing eye tests and screenings,” said Goupalsingh.
The train will arrive in KwaDukuza on February 3 and will depart on the February 16 and will be located at the Stanger Train Statio.
People can access it through the Transnet deport gate.
The Phelophepha Healthcare Train will benefit the people of iLembe District in terms of health care needs.

Among departments who are part of the initiative is Cogta, Social Develoment, Health, SAPS and KwaDukuza Community Safety.
