Renew your firearm licences, urge SAPS

2016-03-09 06:00

THE KwaDukuza SAPS calls upon all those whose firearm licences are due for renewal to start the process at least 90 days before they expire in order for the process of renewing the firearm licences to be as efficient as possible.
KwaDukuza SAPS media liaison, warrant officer Johannes Khoza said the station hopes for a smooth firearm licence application and renewal process.

He said if ones licence has already expired then their firearm will be confiscated but if they voluntarily surrender their firearm then they would not be prosecuted.

“The purpose of renewing a firearm licence or permit is to determine if a person still complies with the provisions of the firearms control act 60 of 2000,” he said.

Khoza said all applicants for the renewal of a licence or permit to possess a firearm must be in possession of a valid and relevant competency certificate.

“Any person who wishes to renew his or her licence to possess a firearm, to deal in firearms, to manufacture firearms or to conduct business as a gunsmith must, at least 90 days before the expiry date of the licence, apply for the renewal of the relevant competency certificate,” he said.

He advised new applicants that they should be in possession of a valid competency certificate before an application is lodged for a firearm licence.
