Response to ‘Mall developers face backlash from locals’ article

2017-11-22 06:00

THE article headed “Mall developers face blacklash from locals” published in the Stanger Weekly which relates to the mall being developed by the Edison Property Group, refers.

The organisation known as Amadela Ngokubona complain in the article that sub-contractors who are not in the data base are getting preference and that local beneficiation (sic) is not taking place. The second complaint seems actually to be that locals are not being employed or contracted in the project. Mention is made in the article of eThekwini Steel. It is assumed that this reference is in fact a reference to Thekwini Reinforcing which manufactures and supplies reinforcing steel. Thekwini Reinforcing is a proudly KwaDukuza company. It commenced business in what was then known as Stanger in 1989. It underwent a name change to Thekwini Reinforcing in 2000. Whilst its head office is in Phoenix, it maintains a branch office in KwaDukuza, where it employs 29 people, nearly all of whom are local. Its BEE credentials are exemplary. There is accordingly no basis at all for Amadela Ngokubona to complain about Thekwini Reinforcing being contracted to supply the Edison Property Group mall Project.
