MANDENI Municipality launched a project to upgrade the rural roads in ward 16 and 17 in Isithebe on Sunday.

The project will upgrade certain roads in these wards at a cost of R10 421 000 and will take eight months to complete should there be no disturbances due to the weather.

Seven locals will be given an opportunity to work on the project. The contractor, Unqambothi Development, was introduced to the community and would employ local people.

Speaking at the launch, Mandeni deputy mayor Phindile Sishi said residents should view the delivery of services and arrival of contractors to fullfil this as an opportunity for them to be employed rather than steal from contractors.

She said members of the public should not say the local councillor is to be blamed for them not being employed on such projects as project steering committees are responsible for that.

Sishi said rural roads need to be upgraded and that by upgrading the ones in these wards the municipality is responding to what members of the community had said they want.
