A SIX-year-old girl was left fighting for her life after “accidentally” being shot in the head at the Shakaskraal taxi rank on Monday morning.
According to reports from the scene the child together with another bystander were injured after an argument between taxi security and a taxi driver.

KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela said the security guard was allegedly attempting to shoot the driver of the taxi in which the six-year-old was a passenger.

“It is alleged that a taxi driver was stationary at the taxi rank when he was approached by a taxi rank security guard, [who] asked him if there was a problem,” he said.

Magudulela said the security guard opened fire, injuring the two victims after the driver had responded to his question.

“The suspect was arrested by Umhlali police at the scene for attempted murder,” he said. The exact details of the argument are not clear.

IPSS Medical Rescue's paramedics were dispatched to the scene and enroute were redirected to Shakaskraal clinic where bystanders had taken the injured child and woman.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, on arrival paramedics found that the six-year-old girl had sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was in a critical condition.
“IPSS Advanced Life Support paramedics were quick to intervene and the child was intubated and placed on a ventilator. An appropriate receiving hospital was updated and received the patient for further emergency medical care. The other patient, a woman, sustained minor injuries to the face due to shrapnel and was treated and transported to Stanger Hospital.”
