Slower every year

SINCE the first democratic voting took place, my local voting station has got progressively worse with each election.

At 10 am, the queue at Carter High School was very long and had barely moved after 30 minutes. There was definitely something amiss.

We asked officials what the hold-up was and were told that the staff were just working slowly.

After an hour and nearing the front of the line, a young man came and peered into our ID books.

He said he was looking for people with surnames starting with R onwards. As he made no move with mine, I pointed out that my surname began with S, so I was someone he was looking for.

A light bulb went off and he told me to go into the school hall.

The power failure hadn’t helped either, and the officials were working in dim lighting. I suggested they draw back the heavy, dark-blue velvet curtains and throw some light on their paper work, which they did.

My deepest sympathies go to all those who are made to stand for hours in the rural areas. Don’t make plans to go elsewhere on the day of the next election as it’s going to be a long wait.
