KWADUKUZA Municipality Deputy Mayor Dolly Govender presided over the handover ceremony of the Ward Eight, state-of-the-art Indoor Combo Court, billed at R1.2 million, on Saturday.

Although it is situated in Ward Eight, this facility will also be used by surrounding communities. The facility has been built to accommodate a variety of sporting codes which includes netball, basketball and volleyball.

Speaking at the occasion, Govender shared some words of encouragement with the community in attendance about reducing crime and getting involved in sport.

“Sport plays a huge role in bringing communities together, having a social and cultural impact, developing social capital and reducing crime and anti-social behaviour. Regular involvement in sport can benefit individuals and communities. Let us use this facility to achieve just that,” said chairperson of the Youth, Sports and Gender Portfolio councillor John Phahla.

Phahla motivated the community to play a central role in safeguarding this infrastructure and also encouraged the youth to participate in sport as it is an alternative employment space that is not yet explored.

“I would like to tread on Mayor Ricardo Mthembu’s words that sport is one area that will assist us to mould our youth outside of the life highly embroiled with substance and drug abuse. We must therefore not be rhetorical in our support to assist young men and women who have chosen a healthy life that will see them become professionals in their own right as well as be able to provide for their families, because professional sportsmen get paid,” added Phahla.
