Suspect in court for alleged rape of 14-year-old

A 42-year-old suspect appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in April last year.

The case was remanded to 23 February 2016 where a decision is to be made on the suspect’s application to relax his bail conditions.

The suspect, whose identity has been withheld to protect the victim and is believed to be a pastor who resided in the Newton area at the time of the alleged incident, was arrested in December last year and granted a bail of R3000 on 15 December 2015.

According to a source, the victim’s mother had lodged a complaint regarding the KwaDukuza SAPS’ handling of the matter.

The case has now been handed over to the Phoenix SAPS Family Violence Unit.

The source said the mother has not received any update on her complaint which led to an internal investigation confirmed by KwaDukuza cluster commander, Brigadier Bheki Zondi earlier this year.

”They keep telling her investigations are ongoing,” said the source, adding, “there are too many politicians involved in this case and they are ruining things.”

“All that they do is ask [the mother] questions, pretend as if they are going to help her with the case and then leave and never return,” the source added.

The source said that the mother has been forced to move away from KwaDukuza because she has had her life threatened. She said the mother reported the threats to the police but received no help.

The victim has not been able to attend school this year as she was due to give birth on Tuesday, 9 February 2016, the source added.
