SCHOOL principal and treasurer of the Ndwedwe District Taxi Association Nhlanhla Mhlongo (62) was killed after being shot last Wednesday, 17 August at the Engonyameni reserve in Ndwedwe.
This is according to KZN SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.

He said the incident occurred at around 1pm when two unknown male suspects allegedly accosted and shot Mhlongo near a school in the area.

“The motive for the killing is unknown. Bhekithemba police are investigating a case of murder and no arrest has been made at this stage,” Zwane said.

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda condemned Mhlongo’s murder.

Kaunda said according to preliminary reports Mhlongo was travelling in his vehicle at the time of the attack.

“A VW Polo allegedly tried to block Mhlongo’s vehicle when unidentified assailants opened fire at him. He died on the scene,” Kaunda said.

The MEC said the murder threatens to undermine the strides that have been made to bring about peace and stability in the taxi industry in KZN.

Kaunda said out of 246 taxi associations operating within the province a few have been identified and noted for having tensions.

“We appeal to all taxi operators to remain calm while we are engaging with affected parties. Law enforcement agencies have been deployed to police the affected areas.

“We will work with the police in finding the perpetrators and we hope members of the community will come forward with information that would lead to the arrest of suspects,” Kaunda said.

He sent his condolences to the family of the deceased.

Mhlongo was a principal at Mpumelelweni Primary School.
