Tense battle for the Dilley Puckree Memorial Singles title

KWADUKUZA Darts Association hosted the Dilley Puckree Memorial Singles Tournament’s last Wednesday night at the Quartz Sportsbar in Stanger Manor. There were 16 entries in the tournament.

The top half of the draw saw Sanjay Singh beat Julian Munisamy 2-1. Singh then took a defeat at the hands of Meersingh Soobram, losing 2-1 with Soobram advancing into the quarters. Vinesh Geanbally beat Vasa Rungasamy 2-1 to meet Soobram in the quarters. Jerry Arunachellum, who came in on high spirits, made it clear from the start that the title belonged to him, beating Naven Coopsamy 2-1.

Nine Pillay defeated Paddy Padayachee 2-0 to meet Arunachellum in the quarters. The bottom half of the draw saw Terrence Subban beat Tridev Singh 2-0. Bradley Naidoo beat Kyle Pillay 2-1 to meet Subban in the quarters.

Leon Moonsamy beat Jodie Naidoo 2-0 while Justin Naidoo, who played excellent darts, beat Jerry Govender 2-0 to meet Moonsamy in the quarters. Justin, who appeared in all three finals for the last three weeks, was now looking to grab the title in this fourth week.

Top half quarters saw Geanbally beating Soobram 2-1 to book himself a spot in the semi’s while Arunachellum beat Nine 2-0 to meet Geanbally in the semi’s. The bottom half saw Bradley beat Subban 2-1 and advance into the semi’s while Justin beat Moonsamy 2-1 to meet Bradley.

The top half of the semi’s was a humdinger as teammates Arunachellum and Geanbally challenged each other but it was Arunachellum who came off victorious, winning 2-1 to advance into the final. The bottom half saw Justin beat Bradley 2-1 to meet Arunachellum in the final.

Justin was looking to grab the title for the fourth week while Arunachellum was looking forward to win his late best friends title.

The final drew a large crowd and in the opening set both players produced top tallies but it was Arunachellum who drew first blood, taking a commanding 1-0 lead. The second set saw Arunachellum posting top tallies, recording a 180 score to leave Justin far behind. Arunachellum then landed himself in a double five (10) and was struggling to close. Justin took full advantage of the opportunity to close the game and level the scores 1-1.

The final game saw Arunachellum waste no time, making no mistakes and finishing the game on a high note to win the Dilley Puckree Memorial Singles title. KDDA thanked Pushpa Puckree for her ongoing sponsorship.
