Time the ANC rectified their mistake

2015-12-16 06:00

DEAR ANC, I cannot suppress my concerns any longer!

The cause of my concern is shared by millions of my fellow compatriots. Let me remind you of the enormity of the problem as we reflect on the person you have chosen to be the frontman of your organisation and more importantly, the president of our country.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela found that Zuma and his family unduly benefited from upgrades made to his private Nkandla home by about R246 million. According to Reuters, Madonsela described the cost overruns as “exponential” and said ministers had handled the project in an “appalling manner”.

Reuters reported that when news of the security upgrade first broke in late 2009, the cost was estimated at R65 million, however, despite intense public scrutiny, the bill ballooned to R246 million as the project and its costs spiralled out of control. The final nail in the coffin of our scandal-plagued president has to be the ridiculously absurd decision to fire Nhlanhla Nene as finance minister, causing the immediate nosedive of the rand to R15,38/$. Mr Nene was a good finance minister and had a strong track record in the Treasury. To introduce an unknown person (even in ANC circles) now implies uncertainty for the investment community. Appointing David van Rooyen expresses the little concern Zuma has for the welfare of our country.

I beg you to please reconsider the decision to allow this man to rule over this country of ours. Being the laughing stock of international proportions is one thing, but to drag this country and the ANC down with him deserves a lot of pondering and definite intervention.

The ANC under Zuma’s watch has seen waning support and rising protests as people echo the same sentiments; enough is enough! This sadly, is a violation of those who lost their lives in fighting apartheid. We all make mistakes; it is time the ANC rectified theirs, if this century old organisation is to play a part in making South Africa a better place for all who live in it.

It is time you as custodians honoured the principles of the Freedom Charter.
