TWO suspects were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a Gledhow businessman at the Durban High Court on Wednesday, October 3.

Siphamandla Sangweni (29) and Philani Khambule (26) were each sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 15 years each for business robbery, and a further eight years for each count of attempted murder.

Both accused were sentenced after the judge heard how they attacked the shop owners and a customer at South Village, Gledhow Mini Market in KwaDukuza.

According to SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele, the incident took place in March 2016 when the two armed suspects approached the victim at his place of business.

“While suspects were busy robbing the victim, a shot was fired from an adjacent bottle store.

“Marshal Naidoo (28) was shot and killed and his mother and a customer were wounded during the shooting.

“They were shot by another group of suspects who were robbing them of cash and other items.

“All suspects fled the scene in a Mercedes Benz belonging to the victims. Later it was found abandoned about a kilometre away from the scene.

“A case of armed robbery, murder and two counts of attempted murder were opened at KwaDukuza police station for further investigation.”

Mbele added, “Through hard work by experienced detectives from the station, they managed to trace and arrest two suspects within a month after the crime was committed.

“Both accused were charged with business robbery, murder and two counts of attempted murder. Finally both accused were convicted and sentenced by the Durban High Court.”
