VUKILE High School was crowned champions of the Road Safety Debate competition last Saturday at Addington Primary School.
The competition was organised by the Department of Transport and was intended to educate young people about road safety.
The school’s debating team went through three rounds squaring off with Mnyameni High School in the first, Mthwalume High School in the second and Our Lady of the Rosary High School in the third and final round.
Vukile High will represent the Durban region at a provincial competition on 3 September.
The team was led by English teacher, Siyathokoza Mchunu, who was awarded for his exemplary work as a teacher of the subject during a circuit awards ceremony earlier this year.
He said the debate helped pupils have a better understanding of the importance of road safety.
“I am happy about this achievement and hope that it will serve as encouragement to other pupils at our school. We worked hard, and this has paid off. I’m happy for the children and their parents,” he said.
