STRIKER Mpilo Mthembu, who is African Wanderers’ top goal scorer this season, came off the bench and replaced their goalkeeper Immanuel “Bhantshi” Msane who was red carded for a professional foul on Sunday to ensure the log leaders conceded no goals in their 4 – 0 victory over Groutville United.

Msane was sent off the pitch 10 minutes into the game after he handled the ball outside his penalty box.
Striker Sabelo Fakazi had to be sacrificed to make way for Mthembu as the stand-in goalkeeper.

However, the red card did not dampen Wanderers’ attack. Five minutes after the incident Wonder Msimango netted the first goal for the log leaders.

In the 25th minute, Msimango slipped another ball passed United’s goalkeeper scoring his brace for the day.

Fielding only 10 men, the team showed their true mettle by going into halftime three goals up against their opponents. The third goal by Siphamandla Masuku came in the 35th minute.

Wanderers scored their last goal 20 minutes into the second-half, equalling Masuku’s tally with that of his team mate Msimango.

Wanderers’ president, Senzo Mbambo commended the match officials for the way they handled the game.

“The game went well and the red card was a fair call, that was a clear professional foul by our goal keeper,” he said.

He said he is happy with the way the team is playing and believes Wanderers can be promoted to the regional league if the players maintain their focus.

SAFA local competition co-ordinator, Magnum Mngadi said: “We are happy with the way the Melville stream is progressing as it has reached the half way mark. We are also happy with Mbambo’s immense contribution to the sport. We wish more business people like him would follow his lead.”

He said by June all fixtures should be concluded and two teams would be promoted to the SAB Regional League.
