Clothing and blankets needed as mercury drops

2015-05-14 06:00

The mercury in Uitenhage each winter drops to an average of 6.8° C during the coldest months and on some days, has been known to drop all the way to freezing point.

“For the destitute living under the stars, and those living in shelters put together from scrap, this can prove to be an enormous hardship and even life threatening,” said Rotarian Shaun Gilbert from the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South.

This club is holding what they call “Winter Nights” where the public of Uitenhage are requested to donate blankets or good condition second hand warm clothing, which the Rotarians will distribute to the needy in the community.

On Friday, 29 May, Rotarians will gather at the open area next to Engen Penford Convenience Centre at the corner of Graaff Reinet Road and Penford Avenue. Blankets and clothing can be dropped off between 17:00 and 22:00.

The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South will have a stand at the above-mentioned open area and intend having a warm fire going.

The Club has expressed its appreciation towards Gerrit Meyer from the Engen Penford Convenience Centre for their collaboration in this cause and also to the generosity of the Uitenhage community.

)People who wish to know more about “Winter Nights” or who would like to make special arrangements for dropping off items are invited to contact Rotarians Leo Doria 083 504 5117, Shaun Gilbert 083 672 5241 or Aubrey Nell 082 4996241
