Gooi e-afval reg weg

Een van VLV Carpe Diem-tak se lede, Mariëtte Maritz, het navorsing oor e-afval gedoen en lede toegespreek oor een van die gevaarlikste aspekte wat die aarde bedreig, naamlik die storting van e-afval.

Tegnologiese vooruitgang en modelverwisseling veroorsaak dat e-afval ‘n vinnig-groeiende probleem word. Items soos ou rekenaars, televisies, afstandbeheerders, selfone, speelgoed wat met batterye werk, gloeilampe en batterye bevat skadelike elemente soos lood, kwik, berillium, kadmium wat ernstige gesondheidsrisiko’s vir die mens inhou.

Volgens Maritz genereer die gemiddelde Suid-Afrikaner jaarliks 7 kg e-Afval.

“Slegs 15 tot 20% daarvan word herwin, die res beland op vullishope of deesdae sommer langs die paaie. Die gifstowwe dreineer in ondergrondse water, damme, fonteine, riviere en uiteindelik in die see,” het Martiz gesê. Water word hierdeur gekontamineer en gaan deur die voedselketting om uiteindelik in die menslike sisteem te beland en siektes soos kanker en ander ernstige siektes is van die nagevolge.

eWASA (e-Waste Association of SA) is in 2008 gestig om die verantwoordelike bestuur van e-Afval in SA te reguleer. Die herwinbare materiale, soos koper, nikkel en plastiek word herwin uit hierdie afval en met die skadelike stowwe word daar op verantwoordelike wyses omgegaan.

Houers vir e-Afval is opgestel by Makro in Port Elizabeth en by Pick ‘n Pay winkels is daar ‘n houer vir buisligte, gloeilampe, batterye en inkkasette. Incredible Connections neem ook e-Afval en by Woolworths Greenacres kan ou selfone en batterye geplaas word.

Op Uitenhage kan kleiner e-Afval na Mariëtte Maritz (041 966 1327 of 082 294 5024) ge-neem word, tot tyd en wyl die munisipaliteit of ‘n groot sakeonderneming moontlik ‘n plan gaan maak. Die VLV versoek mense om nie e-afval by munisipale vullis te gooi nie, maar eerder na die spesiale houers by versamelpunte te neem.
