Rapist sentenced two life terms

A 23-year-old Kirkwood man, Bongani Magugu, has been sentenced to two life terms for rape and 58 years for various serious offences.

Grahamstown High Court imposed the heavy sentence last Thursday. Magugu was earlier convicted on three counts of rape, three counts of robbery aggravating and two counts of housebreaking and theft.

According to police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart, Magugu’s crime spree began in April 2012 in the Moses Mabida area in Kirkwood and came to an end when he was re-arrested on 22 July 2014, whilst he was serving a two-year sentence for robbery in the Kirkwood prison.

Magugu, raped and robbed a 34-year-old Kirkwood woman during April 2012.

During June 2012, Magugu broke into a house in Kirkwood, raped and robbed the 44-year-old victim. During March 2013 he broke into a house in Kirkwood again, raped and robbed a 21-year-old victim.

Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Phillip Salukazana commended Detective Warrant Officer Siphiwo Ndoni for his dedication in investigating these cases and for gathering the evidence that led to the successful prosecution of the accused.
