Sector policing: volunteers needed to help make areas safe

2015-07-02 06:00

Tired of crime? How can a few criminals intimidate 47 million people?

Sector policing patrollers are citizens assisting in fighting crime in respective neighbourhoods. They are the eyes and ears of a community which has had enough of being plagued by criminal activities.

“Be the change you want to see and start getting involved in your community. Fighting crime begins with each individual,” said Pat Unsworth from the Uitenhage Community Policing Forum.

Sector policing means the community gets divided into smaller manageable sectors. The sector patrollers regularly patrol four sectors which cover Vanes Estate, Kruisriver, Uitenhage Central, Fairbridge Heights, Scheepershoogte, Winterhoek Park and the Central Business District.

“We are able to identify and seek appropriate solutions to problems in the areas. Sector policing encourages constant contact with residents of the respective areas as we are the link between the police and the community.

“We are committed volunteers wanting to make a difference and assist without any financial benefits. Being part of a sector policing group is about making your area safe,” said Unsworth.

All interested in sector policing are invited to attend the meeting which will be held today at 17:00 at the Uitenhage Police JOT Room in Church Street.
