The festival of sacrifice

2015-09-17 06:00

Eid-ul-Adha is a time when Muslims globally commemorate the sacrifice of Nabi Ibrahim (Prophet Abraham) Peace be upon Him through the ritual of Qurbani.

“Operation Qurbani is an annual project of the South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF), which aims to meaningfully support people in the most under-resourced areas in our country as well as the Southern African region,” said Nurene Jassiem, SANZAF Marketing andamp; Communications Assistant.

“Most Operation Qurbani beneficiaries live in rural areas where illness is rife, crime is prevalent and people experience chronic food insecurity and poverty, which often leads to hunger and starvation.”

SANZAF Uitenhage hopes to bring relief to some of these beneficiaries through the distribution of meat from this year’s Qurbani for the sake of Allah.

SANZAF facilitates for individuals who have entrusted SANZAF with their Qurbani, to witness or perform their own Qurbani with an animal of their choice.

They are also given the option to be allocated a third of the animal and SANZAF in turn distributes the balance to those in need.

SANZAF Uitenhage invites locals to view their Qurbani programme at the offices at 60 Van der Riet Street, Uitenhage.

You can secure your Qurbani through SANZAF Uitenhage at R1 450 per share locally or R450 per share in Malawi/Mozambique by applying online at or by calling 041 922 6626.

“It is not the meat or the blood that reaches Allah, but the sincerity and piety of your heart.” Surah Al-Hajj Verse 37 (Holy Quran).

•Sanzaf also allocates R10 of each Qurbani share purchased to the Masjid Waqf Fund. This Fund is aimed at assisting masajid (mosques) in need.

This year, SANZAF pledged R400 000 to Masjid dur Rahmah in Lavallia, George, for some much-needed maintenance and revamping to the mosque, which will include the improvement of the ladies section and ablution facilities.
