Be aware of new technology and old tricks

2016-05-26 06:00

Several residents from Uitenhage have fallen prey to perpetrators who use innovative electronic and social media scams to defraud them.

New technology is being combined with old tricks to convince unexpected and ignorant victims to divulge sensitive personal information.

“It is very important to safekeep your personal information to protect yourself against potential fraud,” said police spokesperson Lt Gerda Swart.

Safety hints:

.Make sure that private documents and sensitive information are in a secure place. (ID’s, bank cards, driving licence)

.Never send money or supply personal information in response to an unexpected request (WhatsApp, sms, e-mail or calls)

.Never pay someone who calls out of the blue, even if the name or number looks legit.

.Do not open e-mails if you are not familiar with the sender. No financial institution would request for your log in details via e-mail.

.Pay regular visits to your bank or peruse bank statements/online transactions for unknown pending stop orders.

Report scams to the Federal Trade Commision at ftc.gov/complaint.
