The fifth annual street soccer classic tournament will be hosted by Swiftresponse Street Soccer at the Jubilee Park Sports Fields in Uitenhage on 2 & 4 October.

This time they have Galaxy Bingo as the title sponsor. Local young and enthusiastic soccer players, girls and boys, are invited in team format to join in the sporting fun which will be held during the forthcoming school holidays. Participation is free of charge.

“The purpose of the tournament is to emphasize on gender equality, build friendships, to unite and for the soccer players to enjoy the beautiful game of soccer,” said Ade Adekunle from Swiftsresponse Street Soccer Classic.

Last year’s tournament attracted close to 200 players. This year more players are expected to participate as the tournament boasts a new sponsor, Galaxy Bingo Uitenhage. The categories of participation are U/16 or senior; and all teams need to include at least one girl. Teams consist of 10 players.

“Since we have started with this Galaxy Bingo friendship street soccer league, where teams have to have at least two girls, we have seen an increase in girls playing soccer.

“They actually score the most goals, as a goal scored by a girl counts for 2 points. So the boys depend on the girls to get quick points on the score board,” said Adekunle.

The tournament will be held at the Jubilee Sports Fields in Uitenhage. Registration (free) is at 08:30 on each day of play and participants will receive medals with the winning teams receiving trophies.

“It is not about winning, but about uniting through sport, bonding with new friends, enjoying the game and most importantly to promote fairness amongst genders,” said Adekunle.
