Spirit Life Ministries’ first decade of spreading the good news will be celebrated with a spiritual conference which will be held from Wednesday, June 1st to Sunday, June 5th.

The conference hosts, Apostle Monto and Claudia van der Merwe, invite all interested to attend, as this is for the community, who will be the special guests sharing in the love of God.

Humble beginnings

“It was humble beginnings. My wife and I were inspired to plant a church to spread the Word of God. We started our ministry from scratch ... with nothing, just trusting God,” said Apostle Monto van der Merwe.

“Our first gathering was during February 2006. We were seven people who came together in the comfort of our television lounge at home in Despatch.”

Two months down the line the Ministry outgrew the lounge and it became time to occupy a larger premises. Thus they moved to a venue at Eastcape Midlands College.

This, after a year, was also too small to accommodate the growing number of people and Spirit Life Ministries then occupied the former recreational centre in Cannon Street. Nowadays the Ministry provides spiritual guidance to multi-racial and multi-national congregation of about 350 people.

“We really saw the need for an English charismatic family church which is community orientated. It was not the case of trying to duplicate anything, but rather to have a more liberated church offering spiritual freedom,” said Claudia van der Merwe.

Healing & restoration

Apostle Van der Merwe speaks from the heart and mentions that Spirit Life Ministries caters for a beautiful group of young vibrant people, middle age to older ones.

“It has been a steadfast walk to establish. But being charismatic it is all about having the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, trusting God for the reviving of the Spirit.”

“Our ministry strives to see the broken hearted, the drug addicted and all who so desperately long for the healing power of God, to be set free. We can’t give them enough church.

“We see God heal. We see God set free. There is hope and it is real, it is exciting and it also is fun. But you need to take the first step!”

Community & international

The Ministry has beem running a community project in Moeggesukkel for the past five years, where they minister and feed the needy and do a lot of social upliftment and dignity restoration.

An International Mission Team will this year for the 8th time visit a foreign country to spread the Word of God. Back home an Evangelism Team visits Market Square on Saturday mornings to interact with the people and pray for the sick and destitute.

The HipHip, Rap and Art groups are very popular among the young ones and it coincides with gospel.

Apostle Van der Merwe is assisted by Pastor Godfrey Roberts and his wife Pamela.

During weekdays, the Ministry is open from 08:00 to 14:00 to serve who-ever needs of spiritual guidance.

Weekday activities include: Mondays: Hospital Ministry, Ladies Refresh (open to all women); Tuesdays: Discipleship training; Wednesdays: Care Groups; Thursdays: Creative Arts & Worship; Fridays: Youth; Saturdays: Local Outreach; Sundays: Kingdom Kids Sunday School & Service 09:00.
