2016-04-28 06:00

A lot of research is being done to try to find the cause of autism, but as yet there are no definite answers. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development.

Autism is characterized in varying degrees by:

•Difficulties in social interaction

•Repetitive behaviours

•Differences in sensory perception

•Preferring to play alone

•Uneven gross/fine motor skills

•Sudden laughing or crying for no reason

•Minimal reaction to verbal input, acts as though deaf

•Changes in routine/environment cause distress

•No real fear of dangers

•Self-injurious behaviour e.g. head banging

•One out of 68 children is diagnosed with autism

•Autism is diagnosed 4 times as often in boys than in girls

•Not one person with autism is affected in the same way
