Motorists should check the renewal date on their licence discs as notices for licence disc renewals are not issued anymore.

Many motorists who waited to be notified by mail, now have to pay fines for late renewals.

This is because of the National Department of Transport’s (DOT) transfer of the Electronic National Traffic Information System (eNaTIS) to the Road Traffic Management Centre.

It is now required of all South African drivers, to provide a proof of residence when applying to renew their vehicle licence. Proof of address can include a utility bill issued by the municipality or a retail store account (it should not be older than three months).

The new rule came into effect in November 2015 by the National Department of Transport as part of Regulation 32A of the National Road Traffic Regulations.

If motorists are applying for their discs online, they are required to scan their proof of residence and identity documentation and to send it as an attachment to the online application.
