THE famous orange vintage VW Beetle will no longer head towards Uitenhage Convent Primary in the mornings as its driver, Wenda Marsch, has retired.

John Dennis, principal of the school said, “Ms Marsh has for 40 years been an integral part of our school. She always strived to bring out the best qualities of all our learners at the Convent Primary.

“We thank her for sharing her talents with us and for being such a wonderful example in all aspects of her life.”

Ms Marsh is born and bred in Uitenhage. She attended Riebeek College where she later also taught before leaving for the then Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) during the 1960s.

She later returned to Uitenhage and became involved with Uitenhage Convent Roman Catholic Primary School as the secretary, when her daughter was at the pre-primary school.

The first principal she worked under was Sister Noreen Christian, the last of the sisters of the Dominican Order to be appointed as principal at the school.

During Ms Marsch’s years at the Convent Primary, she started coaching her favourite sport, swimming and assisted with the organising of galas. She also with great success started netball at the school.

Ms Marsch introduced another love of hers to the school - plays. She produced the first Christmas play during 1978 and thereafter, Nativity plays were staged every year until 2018. Apart from that she ran a very active and lively drama club for many years, with members winning many gold and silver awards at festivals.

From 2006 she was the school librarian, encouraging learners to read.

“The staff, learners and parents would like to thank Ms Marsch for being such a faithful and dedicated educator, secretary, bursar and librarian the past 40 years.

“We thank her for sharing her talents with us and for being such a wonderful example in all aspects of her life.

“You have left an indelible mark on us all and we are going to miss you Wenda! We wish you a deserved rest and retirement,” said principal Dennis. -REPORTER
