IF the end results of what a life spirals down to by using drugs could have been offered to learners - free of charge - they for sure would not take it.

Unfortunately learners using drugs opt to pay their way to a life of self-imposed emotional and physical abuse and pain that damages everything and everyone around them.

“There is an alarming increase in Uitenhage schools of drug abuse among learners. This goes hand-in-hand with their involvement in gangsterism to help fund their drugs,” said Stephen Grootboom, co-ordinator of the Unite Against Drugs & Gangsterism project.

Grootboom together with Uitenhage High, John Walton High and McCarthy High in conjunction with the Department of Social Development, police and correctional service are involved with the project. Learners from these schools will act in a special role play about drugs and gangsterism.

“The aim is to give learners an idea what the negative effects are when using drugs or getting involved in gangsterism. And to help them to get out and focus on their future in a positive way,” said Grootboom.

He explained that the role play is about a drug dealer, who everybody fear, is taking over a community. He even has friends in the police who tip him off when a raid is heading to his drug post. In return these corrupt police members then receive money. Eventually a task team gets involved and the story takes an interesting turn.

Miss Port Elizabeth 2018, Sibongiseni Kula, will be present at the event tomorrow afternoon.

  • Learners are invited to come and watch the role play which will be held tomorrow at 15:00 at the Allanridge Civic Centre. Admission is R10. For more information contact Stephen Grootboom at 061 616 8706.
