OPERATION Basadi consisting of a team of female police officers, led by Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, took to the streets through gang territory interacting with the community and handing out pamphlets.

The 7 hour operation included road blocks, raiding drug hotspots, stop and search operations, all conducted by female law enforcers from the South African Police Service, Metro Police as well as learners from schools who were nominated during the EC Junior Commissioner’s project.

The Provincial Commissioner was flanked by the Chief of Metro Police - Yolande Faro, the Station Commander of Humewood - Brigadier Leonie Bentley, CPF members and female officers from Uitenhage, Motherwell and Mount Road Clusters.

Lt Gen Ntshinga urged the community to work with the police and to report illegal activities and persons with illegal firearms and dangerous weapons to the police.

She urged the community to “not harbour criminals who are instilling fear in law abiding citizens and also not to attack the police who are doing their job in protecting lives and property.”

The community was very receptive of the Provincial Commissioner and her entourage and voiced their concerns as well as their praise for police presence in the area.

A total of 205 officers participated in Operation Basadi. Twelve (12) arrests were made and the officers confiscated 2 firearms, 200 packets of dagga, 74 dagga plants, 10 mandrax tablets, a cell phone and issued 44 fines. – REPORTER
