The global trend of sharing a world of dreams through the global technology, entertainment and design (TED) conferences, is heading to Nelson Mandela Bay with its first conference themed “Through the Looking Glass”.

These conferences are run by the private non-profit organization Sapling Foundation, under the slogan “Ideas Worth Spreading”. It is about spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less).

A full line-up of 15 guests in the fields of technology, entertainment and design will be presented at TEDxPortElizabeth, with 5 of them having strong connections to Uitenhage. They are the 7-year old Caleb Zealand who has an exceptional interest in palaeontology, the artist Colleen Grewar, former Uitenhage teacher Deshun Deysel and now famous mountaineer, former librarian Elizabeth Muller, former educator Joe Slingers.

“The talks will be filmed and shared on the TEDx YouTube channel - an opportunity to showcase Nelson Mandela Bay’s best and brightest on the global stage,” said Ramon Thomas, TEDxPortElizabeth founder.

“The people of Nelson Mandela Bay will have the opportunity to be captivated by Farah Fortune, known in the entertainment industry as the ‘Pitbull in Heels’. She is the CEO of African Star Communications, a publicist company with offices in Lagos, Nigeria and Johannesburg.”

The guest list also includes Deshun Deysel - a former school teacher from Uitenhage now based in Johannesburg - who was a member of the first South African expedition to Mt Everest, which saw her country’s new flag planted at the top of the world for the first time. She has been on some of the world’s highest mountains in 14 expeditions over 5 continents in 15 years.

Deysel, Laureus Sports Ambassador, then moved on to become an international business coach. Starting her own business called Deshun Deysel & Associates using keynotes, coaching, seminars and adventurous experiences, to encourage leaders in their struggle to harness diversity for better work performance.

Wikimedia editor and board member on the South African chapter, Bobby Shabangu, yearned for articles native to people and traditions of Africa. In late 2012 he began to edit both isiSwati and English Wikipedia articles.
