ILLEGAL dumping sites have been increasing rapidly in Uitenhage with no willingness from the municipality to put an end to the matter.

Ward 48 councillor, Tyrone Adams who has reported the issue to the municipality several times but has received no feedback said the houses near to these sites are infested with rats and flies.

“In Gerald Smith alone, I counted 9 illegal dumping sites,”

“Children are getting sick from the stench,” he said.

Adams said spaza shops are the main contributors as they dump their waste when everyone is sleeping.

He also said that members of the community are seen to be dumping in broad daylight.

“As a community we need to work together in order to keep our areas clean,” said Adams.

He said what was most appalling was the reluctance from officials to have these sites cleaned up.

“The municipality should clean up these areas and put a notice board up which explains to the community that no dumping is allowed and that transgressors will face jail time or pay a hefty fine,” said Adams.

He also said the municipality should collect waste at least once a week.

He urged the community to report transgressors to the office of the ward councillor or phone the illegal dumping number at 0419941137.
