“We will be ensuring the safety of entrants. Our qualified lifesavers will be in the water monitoring the competitors.”

This is according to Paul Lynch, Vice Chairman of Kings Beach Surf Life Saving Club, who said the XTERRA is a fantastic event.

“Hosting this event definitely cements Port Elizabeth as a fantastic coast city for iconic events.

“As we are a community based club it is an honour to be associated with XTERRA.”

Lynch said they would also make use of boats as an additional safety option.

“It is always great to be part of an event where people are enjoying themselves, while keeping fit and healthy.”

South Africa’s leading off road triathlon, the Fedhealth XTERRA, will host its Nelson Mandela Bay debut the weekend of 29 – 31 January at Kings Beach, a Blue Flag Beach.

The criteria that need to be met to obtain Blue Flag status include: standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management criteria.

The Blue Flag is an indication of the beach’s high environmental and quality standards.
