A service club is a voluntary non-profit organisation where members meet regularly and network to perform charitable work, either by direct hands-on efforts or by raising funds for persons in need or other charitable organisations.

Lions clubs are well known in communities across the globe, where they have been of service for the past 100 years. In celebration of this milestone, Lions Club International (LCI) set a challenge to their 1.4 million members to take up “Project 100” which basically is aimed at any project that involves the number 100.

“To this effect both the Uitenhage Lions and Leo Clubs combined for a Winter Bedding Project - 100 Deeds for 100 Needs, with the objective to serve the very young,” said Lion president Hein de Vrey.

The project set up collection points at the Levyvale SuperSpar in Uitenhage and Despatch SuperSpar.

“The local UD community responded magnificently and we can confirm that ‘Project 100’ more than met its objective,” said De Vrey.

As the objective was to provide winter bedding for the very young all the items donated were distributed through youth organisations in Uitenhage and Despatch.

“We wish to extend our sincerest appreciation to local businesses and all who made an effort to help make life a bit easier for all those in need,” said Leo President Charria Vlooh.
